Who we are

PPS-PC is our local chapter of Parents for Public Schools, Inc., a national organization with a “new brand of parent involvement” which strives to elevate the role of parents in public schools from passive consumers to active participants. PPS parents raise standards, solve problems and advocate for their community. In short, PPS parents demand excellent schools and have the skills to make it happen.

National PPS accomplishes work through three main vehicles:

  • A network of community-based chapters located throughout the country that tackle local issues and represent the voice of parents.
  • A Parent Leadership Institute, which empowers parents and provides them with professional training that rivals FORTUNE 500 programs.
  • Leadership and empowerment training for like-minded organizations across the United States.
Our local chapter accomplishes work through three key initiatives:
  • Community Conversations: Community Conversations are discussions held with parents and community members who want to share their perspectives on public education in informal, friendly environments and learn about current education topics. The format is similar to focus group technique with wide ranging, open-ended questions relating to public education in Pitt County. Sessions typically begin with an anonymous one-page questionnaire about public education. To schedule a conversation for your group, contact Jill Camnitz at jcamnitz@gmail.com.

  • PEP: The Parent Engagement Program (PEP) is a parent leadership class developed by PPS, Inc. that seeks to improve student achievement, increase parent engagement, and enhance school-parent collaboration. PEP trainings are conducted by local facilitators and supported by a PEP Coordinator, all trained by the national staff. PEP trainings require a substantial commitment of time and energy by up to 30 participants per class. For more information on PEP, contact Robin Dailey at daileyr@pitt.k12.nc.us.

  • School Tours: Aimed at recruiting new families to our public schools, PPS Public School Recruitment Tours are offered in cooperation with Pitt County Schools. PPS will arrange each tour and visit schools that participants are interested in seeing. Tours will also be provided to business leaders or other local residents interested in seeing first hand the activities and initiatives happening in our local schools. To schedule a tour, contact our Executive Director at kdibble@ppspittcounty.org.
